| For there are no bands in their death: but their strength is firm. | Denn ich ereiferte mich über die Ruhmredigen, als ich sah, daß es den Gottlosen so gut ging. | (72:3) quia aemulatus sum contra iniquos pacem impiorum videns |
| They are not in trouble as other men; neither are they plagued like other men. | Denn für sie gibt es keine Qualen, gesund und feist ist ihr Leib. | (72:4) quod non recogitaverint de morte sua et firma sint vestibula eorum |
| Therefore pride compasseth them about as a chain; violence covereth them as a garment. | Sie sind nicht in Mühsal wie sonst die Leute und werden nicht wie andere Menschen geplagt. | (72:5) in labore hominum non sunt et cum hominibus non flagellabuntur |
| Their eyes stand out with fatness: they have more than heart could wish. | Darum prangen sie in Hoffart und hüllen sich in Frevel. | (72:6) ideo nutriti sunt ad superbiam circumdederunt iniquitatem sibi |
| They are corrupt, and speak wickedly concerning oppression: they speak loftily. | Sie brüsten sich wie ein fetter Wanst, sie tun, was ihnen einfällt. | (72:7) processerunt a pinguidine oculi eorum transierunt cogitationes cordis |
| They set their mouth against the heavens, and their tongue walketh through the earth. | Sie achten alles für nichts und reden böse, sie reden und lästern hoch her. | (72:8) inriserunt et locuti sunt in malitia calumniam de excelso loquentes |
| Therefore his people return hither: and waters of a full cup are wrung out to them. | Was sie reden, das soll vom Himmel herab geredet sein; was sie sagen, das soll gelten auf Erden. | (72:9) posuerunt in caelo os suum et lingua eorum deambulavit in terra |
| And they say, How doth God know? and is there knowledge in the most High? | Darum fällt ihnen der Pöbel zu und läuft ihnen zu in Haufen wie Wasser. | (72:10) propterea convertetur populus eius hic et quis plenus invenietur in eis |
| Behold, these are the ungodly, who prosper in the world; they increase in riches. | Sie sprechen: Wie sollte Gott es wissen? Wie sollte der Höchste etwas merken? | (72:11) et dixerunt quomodo novit Deus et si est scientia in Excelso |
| Verily I have cleansed my heart in vain, and washed my hands in innocency. | Siehe, das sind die Gottlosen; die sind glücklich in der Welt und werden reich. | (72:12) ecce isti impii et abundantes in saeculo multiplicaverunt divitias |
| For all the day long have I been plagued, and chastened every morning. | Soll es denn umsonst sein, daß ich mein Herz rein hielt und meine Hände in Unschuld wasche? | (72:13) ergone frustra mundavi cor meum et lavi in innocentia manus meas |
| If I say, I will speak thus; behold, I should offend against the generation of thy children. | Ich bin doch täglich geplagt, und meine Züchtigung ist alle Morgen da. | (72:14) et fui flagellatus tota die et increpatio mea in matutinis |
| When I thought to know this, it was too painful for me; | Hätte ich gedacht: Ich will reden wie sie, siehe, dann hätte ich das Geschlecht deiner Kinder verleugnet. | (72:15) dixi si narravero sic ecce generationem filiorum tuorum reliqui |
| Until I went into the sanctuary of God; then understood I their end. | So sann ich nach, ob ich's begreifen könnte, aber es war mir zu schwer, | (72:16) et cogitavi ut intellegerem istud labor est in oculis meis |
| Surely thou didst set them in slippery places: thou castedst them down into destruction. | bis ich ging in das Heiligtum Gottes und merkte auf ihr Ende. | (72:17) donec veniam ad sanctuaria Dei intellegam in novissimo eorum |
| How are they brought into desolation, as in a moment! they are utterly consumed with terrors. | Ja, du stellst sie auf schlüpfrigen Grund und stürzest sie zu Boden. | (72:18) verumtamen in lubrico posuisti eos deiecisti eos ad interitum |
| As a dream when one awaketh; so, O Lord, when thou awakest, thou shalt despise their image. | Wie werden sie so plötzlich zunichte! Sie gehen unter und nehmen ein Ende mit Schrecken. | (72:19) quomodo vastati sunt subito defecerunt consumpti sunt quasi non sint |
| Thus my heart was grieved, and I was pricked in my reins. | Wie ein Traum verschmäht wird, wenn man erwacht, so verschmähst du, Herr, ihr Bild, wenn du dich erhebst. | (72:20) quasi somnium evigilantis Domine in civitate tua imaginem eorum ad nihilum rediges |
| So foolish was I, and ignorant: I was as a beast before thee. | Als es mir wehe tat im Herzen und mich stach in meinen Nieren, | (72:21) quia contractum est cor meum et lumbi mei velut ignis fumigans |
| Nevertheless I am continually with thee: thou hast holden me by my right hand. | da war ich ein Narr und wußte nichts, ich war wie ein Tier vor dir. | (72:22) et ego insipiens et nescius |
| Thou shalt guide me with thy counsel, and afterward receive me to glory. | Dennoch bleibe ich stets an dir; denn du hältst mich bei meiner rechten Hand, | (72:23) quasi iumentum factus sum apud te et eram semper tecum |
| Whom have I in heaven but thee? and there is none upon earth that I desire beside thee. | du leitest mich nach deinem Rat und nimmst mich am Ende mit Ehren an. | (72:24) et tenebas manum dexteram meam in consilium tuum deduces me et postea in gloria suscipies me |
| My flesh and my heart faileth: but God is the strength of my heart, and my portion for ever. | Wenn ich nur dich habe, so frage ich nichts nach Himmel und Erde. | (72:25) quid mihi est in caelo et tecum nolui in terra |
| For, lo, they that are far from thee shall perish: thou hast destroyed all them that go a whoring from thee. | Wenn mir gleich Leib und Seele verschmachtet, so bist du doch, Gott, allezeit meines Herzens Trost und mein Teil. | (72:26) consumpta est caro mea et cor meum robur cordis mei et pars mea Deus in aeternum |
| But it is good for me to draw near to God: I have put my trust in the Lord GOD, that I may declare all thy works. | Denn siehe, die von dir weichen, werden umkommen; du bringst um alle, die dir die Treue brechen. | (72:27) quia ecce qui elongant se a te peribunt perdidisti omnem fornicantem a te |
| Aber das ist meine Freude, daß ich mich zu Gott halte und meine Zuversicht setze auf Gott den HERRN, daß ich verkündige all dein Tun. | (72:28) mihi autem adpropinquare Deo bonum est posui in Domino Deo spem meam ut narrem omnes adnuntiationes tuas |
